COVID Thoughts: Masks

I have a collection of masks.

Started collecting them
when I was a child,
and kept adding
as the years went by.

Each day,
I go through my masks
and decide which one to wear.

On most days
I pick the cool mask;
to reflect the person
the world thinks I am -
calm, unflustered, in control.

Some days it's
the happy mask,
the sad mask,
or the funny mask,
depending on my mood.

The victim mask
is a usual favourite;
suits well on most days.

There are many more
in my wardrobe -
the humility mask,
the intellectual mask,
the spiritual mask,
the hypocrisy mask,
the kindness mask,
the caring mask.

It's not an easy decision
to choose each day,
a mask to fit the part -
to blend in
or to stand out.

But COVID has changed all that.

No more struggles
or difficult choices,
to choose which mask
to wear today,
to choose which face
to present today.

I can blindly reach out,
and slip the same one on,
each and every day.

Masks

PS: #100KMASKS is an interesting initiative where close to half a million people from all over the world have reflected and shared on the various masks that they wear in their daily lives.

Yes, I am sure it will make a big impact on people who have been forced to wear these masks - being aware of it and now being given the freedom to express it out, will in itself the first step in their healing..
