Escalator

At the end of a long, tiring day,
I stood at the top of a stalled escalator.

The dead fleet of descending steps;
the still, cold, striped metal steps,
left me deflated, depressed,
and equally lifeless.

But just across,
I saw happy faces
being swept upwards,
smoothly, effortlessly;
fresh, beaming faces,
almost taunting me,
as I stood helpless.

With a curse on my lips,
and a deep, heavy sigh,
I trudged down the steps
heavily, grudgingly.

Almost in a daze,
my head spinning;
the cold, striped steps dancing -
a wicked, mocking dance,
mocking me to my face.

Not much later,
arms aching with heavy bags,
I stood at the bottom of the moving escalator.

I breathed a sigh of relief,
slid on to the moving steps,
and soon got off at the top,
hardly breaking a sweat.

I walked away pondering,
I walked away wondering,
how quickly things had changed.

How quickly a sigh of despair,
had become a sigh of relief.
A curse just moments ago,
now no longer seemed so.

If only we give ourselves time,
how many of our misfortunes
would turn into blessings?
Some slowly by and by,
and some perhaps even
in the twinkling of an eye?

positive Mental Attitude(PMA) is a gift from God. Some are born with it and most of us have to strive for it and that is the great message I believe the poem is about. It is up to the parents to inculcate PMA in their children in the early years. A very good message for young Parents, beautifully articulated.
